"What's The Difference b/w Drugstore & High-End Makeup?"

- Coco

Back in the day, drugstore makeup couldn't even remotely hold a candle to more expensive brands, but things are changing now! Plenty of inexpensive brands have popped up offering products that work just as well as their more expensive counterparts (and are basically a 'dupe' or copy of a higher-end product), which is great news for everyone's wallets! There are still some key differences that may drive you to make a bigger investment though. Here's why:

1. Inexpensive products may have less pigment & blend poorly Especially when it comes to powder eyeshadow and powder blush, you will probably notice a significant difference in the amount of color payoff and smoothness of application you can get compared to a higher-end brand. If a product has less pigment, you will have a hard time getting it to 'show up' when you're putting it on, and it will likely fade much quicker than a more pigmented product.

2. Drugstore products may have bad shades when it comes to foundation & concealer Even though drugstore brands are offering more shades than ever when it comes to products made for your skintone, the shades are often not as refined as those you'd find in higher-end brands. It seems as though there are a lot of tones that won't match anyone well...whether they are too pink, too orange-y, or have a grey cast. Some women will be able to find a match thanks to brands like L'Oreal creating an extensive range with their True Match foundation, but in general, you might have more success with brands like Make Up For Ever or Fenty that you'd find at Sephora.

3. Cheaper products just don't 'feel' as nice This is true both when it comes to packaging and the products themselves. Cheap packaging often breaks quicker and is definitely focused more on function than on style (I mean...have you seen how chic Tom Ford makeup is? You just won't find that at CVS)! Also, you might notice things like a $30 lipstick going on smoother and feeling more comfortable on the lips than a cheaper counterpart. Although some less expensive brands offer great products, luxury will always be luxury.

The bottom line with all of this is that you have to weigh your options when it comes to makeup shopping. No matter where you're shopping, every single brand offers some products that are great, and some...not so much! The best advice is really to mix it up (if your budget allows, of course), and find what works for you both at the drug store and big makeup stores like Ulta. This will entail a bit of trial and error, but in the end, you're going to find great products that work well for you.
